AVIAN DNA SEXING
Sexing any bird is as simple as pulling out 2 feathers!

Advanced molecular diagnostics have produced a test known as PCR. Using this test, the differences in DNA of male and female birds can be detected with ease. DNA from the birds could be obtained from either feathers or blood sample. We test from feather samples.
1. Prepare sample bags
Label a zip-lock plastic bag or an envelope for each of the birds that are to be sexed. The label should show some form of identification e.g. Ring Number L31, Sammy, etc.
2. Print out the documents
Print this Form. Complete the form with all the requested information regarding the birds that are to be sexed. (click for PDF version)
3. Pull Feathers
2 wing or tail feathers should be pulled out from each bird. If you must submit body feathers, please submit at least 5; we prefer to have tail or wing feathers.
Pull firmly and quickly and place the feathers into the envelope or bag. Please ensure feathers are pulled from the bird and not picked up from the ground or cut.
4. Mail Feathers
Post the bags/envelopes to us with the completed printed Form .
